Part 3 of The Complete Girl Scout Guide to Traveling to Savannah, Georgia
A quick note about traveling with parents. Our parents have all known one another since the girls were younger and it wasn’t any surprise that they’d want to travel with their girls. I think there’s a big advantage to having them travel with us – but some disadvantages also. We had 2 families choose to drive to Savannah instead of traveling as a group. This was made for both financial and personal reasons. We have one parent who is terrified of planes, trains, and boats! While I know this fear is shared by a few of the girls, I really wish the girls would have been able to face their fear of trains and travel with us as a group. Another disadvantage with traveling with parents is the desire for parents to change plans (mostly for meals and free time) that split the group up on occasion. I do feel like as a troop leader the advantages outweigh any disadvantages because I did not have to be responsible (directly) for all of the girls – all of the time! I didn’t have to worry about getting them up every morning or worry about them sneaking out of their rooms at night. I didn’t have to worry about losing a child in a crowd because we had enough eyes watching them. Finally, I know that traveling without their parents would have really helped these girls develop a sense of independence and confidence. As with any progression in Girl Scouts this was a good first step into travel and I’m hopeful that our next trip can be a girls only trip if they want it!
Parents had to pay their own expenses but we did collect a majority of the money as we made reservations so that we could include the parents on the same reservation to avoid confusion when we got to Savannah. I’ll share more about this in Part 13: Budgeting and Expenses.
