This is a great idea for those tiny little rocks left at the bottom of your bag that are too small for regular paintings. Replace boring flash cards with fun painted rocks to help your little one with their math and numbers. For the smaller toddlers you can leave out the math symbols and use them to help with number recognition. For your younger elementary children adding and subtraction facts can be practiced. My daughter is in 3rd grade and practicing their multiplication facts and starting to work on division. You may want to have a few sets of numbers as the problems get harder. For my Florida rock painting friends (or for anyone with family members in the state of Florida) have you started saving for your child's (or grandchildren's) college yet? It's open enrollment ... I'm sure by now you've heard about Kindness Rocks and seen some of the fun painted rocks that people are finding around your community. It's a movement that started about a year ago and has spread across the country. People paint rocks, hide them in your local community, and bring a smile to someone's day when they find one hiding. While I'm sure you've seen some amazing and talented artists pictures of painted rocks; painted rocks can be fun for anyone regardless of skill level. If you're wanting to give painted rocks a try here are a few things you'll want to know before you get started. Supplies Needed: Smooth rocks and stones! Any size or shape! I find my rocks at Lowes but you can find them anywhere. Acrylic paint, paint pens, markers, pens, etc. Water based paints work best; just avoid tempera or poster paint. Paint brushes. Painted Rock Challenge – November 2017
It's almost November! That means the holiday season is quickly approaching and I'm sure you have a lot of fun ideas for Thanksgiving and Christmas for your painted rocks. Over the next 1-2 weeks I'll be getting a headstart of the December calendar and I'll be posting some smaller holiday themed mini-challenges! These mini-challenges will be holiday specific and will have between 10-20 different ideas. The November challenge isn't overly heavy in Thanksgiving themes since I'll be posting the mini-challenge by the end of the week. As always, these challenges can be completed in any order and at any speed. They are just for fun and to help give you ideas on what to paint. For many of you these challenges help you expand your confidence and try something out of your comfort zone. While I don't always get the entire month painted myself, I love watching all of you and seeing how these themes are interpreted by others. I didn't create a simple version (kid-friendlier version) this month ... [ Read More ]
Colored Pencil on Rocks
Yes, you can use colored pencils to "paint" or color on rocks instead of paint! I didn't feel like getting my paints out this evening so I decided to try colored pencils instead. I had a brand new bag of rocks just waiting to be colored and I couldn't resist! I'm in love!!! I used my favorite Prismacolor colored pencils on the raw rock. The only thing that I did was rinse and dry the rock before I got started. I've always loved my Prismacolor pencils because the colors are so bright and vivid. They are super soft and blend easily (unlike cheaper colored pencils) and these are even waterproof. You could use paint and pens/markers along with colored pencils if you wanted an even richer look. When I was done I wanted to see how well my sealer worked and prayed it wouldn't smear the colored pencils! Guess what, it came out perfectly with my clear spray sealer. I'm excited to have another media to use on my rocks now and can't wait to work on a few more colored pencil rocks ... [ Read More ]
Painted Rock Challenge – October 2017
Hello again rock friends!! I hope you're having a rocking good day! How many times have you refreshed the page today hoping to see the latest list? Thanks for being so patient as I enjoyed a relaxing Saturday with the family. In addition to a little rock painting, our Saturday's are spent watching college football (Go Dawgs!!) October was a fun list to create!! We love Halloween here and I cannot wait to see all your spooky and fun rocks this month. In addition, I created a new "easier" version for newbies and kids! While I labeled it "For Kids," the themes are just a little easier than the original challenge list and open for anyone to paint. I know my daughter loves to paint with me and others have said that some of the challenge themes are too complicated or hard for little kids. I hope they love the new kids list and I can't wait to see their work too. Please feel free to share this post on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or anywhere you happen to be. If you’re posting your rock ... [ Read More ]
Painted Rock Challenge – September 2017
Hello there rock friends! I bet you're looking for the next painted rock challenge, aren't you? You are in the right place. This is the home of the monthly Painted Rock Challenge. I began this adventure earlier this year as a way to challenge my creative limits. I had no idea it was going to be shared all around the world, so thank you so much for being part of this journey. I personally didn't get to paint much in August, because life happens and hobbies get pushed aside. We're finally getting back into our Back to School routines, so I'm hopeful I'll have more time this coming month. Please feel free to share this post on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or anywhere you happen to be. If you're posting your rock paintings online, I'd love to follow along and see what you create. Just use the #PaintedRockChallenge hashtag. September has a few special dates and holidays that sparked some of the ideas in the challenge. Sept 2: International Bacon Day, Sept 9: Teddy Bear Day (AKA ... [ Read More ]

Painted Rocks Challenge – May 2017
It's official, I'm addicted to painting rocks! Just over a month ago I started painting rocks and I haven't stopped! It's been years since I've had my painting supplies out and picked up a paintbrush almost every single day! My kids are even joining in the fun and painting a few with me. For me, painting is my creative outlet.....but even more than that, it's a stress release for me at the end of the day. Why rocks? They are small, inexpensive, and quick. It's also a new fad hitting towns across the US where people will paint rocks and hide them for others to find. It's a great way to spread a little love and brighten someone's day. I will admit that I paint more than I hide, but I am trying to let go of a few more and hide them around town. It's really fun to see who finds them. Many people will join a local painted rock group and post their finds, then some of those people will hide them again to re-share the love! Want to know how to get started and why supplies you'll need? ... [ Read More ]
Painted Rocks – How To Get Started
Have you heard about the newest fad spreading around the US lately? People of all ages are painting rocks and hiding them at parks and other public places around their towns for people to find. I began seeing the fad shortly after Pokemon Go became popular. It was a n0n-electronics version of the game giving kids a chance to get outside and hunt for things. It's also a similar activity as geo-caching but without special coordinates to help you find the hidden treasures. You can find hidden rocks all over your town and you never know when or where the next one will show up. There really aren't many rules, just have fun and be respectful. Here are a few things that will make your rock hunting and finding more enjoyable: Find a rock, hide a rock! Keep the movement going, try not to be "that person" who only collects without giving back. If you find a rock you don't want to keep, rehide it! Even if you didn't bring your own rocks with you, try not to take them all. Keep a few ... [ Read More ]
