Cloth diapering a baby is easy! If you're new to cloth diapering and just starting to do your research you may be a little overwhelmed. I'm going to share with you some of my secrets so that you won't be scared any longer! I promise, you can do this!! 1. Start with the basics! There are a LOT of different styles of cloth diapers, but the main ones you need to know in the beginning are pocket diapers, all-in-one diapers, and diaper covers with prefolds. Pocket diapers are the most popular style because they are so versatile. All-in-ones are the easiest style and the style that is most like a disposable diaper; however they tend to cost the most. Covers with prefolds are the "old fashioned" style diaper and the most cost effective. Pick the style that best suits your financial and personal preferences ... [ Read More ]

Project Pomona Pants Designed for Real Babies & Cloth Diapers
Does your baby wear cloth diapers? Do you have a hard time finding pants that fit over their fluffy bum? Hate having to buy a size up only to have pants way too long? Then you need Project Pomona! Oh how I wish I still had a baby in cloth diapers to wear these adorable pants! Pomona Pants are designed with just a little extra room in the trunk to accommodate a babies diapers (fits both disposable and cloth diapers in the same size). They have a low rise in the front to make room for those little baby bellies and perhaps the most unique feature is the snapping waist and hip panel. There are three snaps (similar to the snaps found on cloth diapers) on each waist/hip to adjust to fit your baby perfectly. I honestly don't know why the clothing industry hasn't thought of this yet! Ever since I can remember baby clothes have those hideous metal snaps that go up the inside of each leg (so you can change diapers easier - as if that's possible) or elastic waist that may or may ... Toddlers & Nighttime Potty Training
Lil' B is now 3 years old (and about 5 months) and we have been potty trained for months now during the day - most of the time. Yes, we still have the occasional day accident like this past weekend when I was doing laundry. I went to her room to put away clothes and realized there were a pair of panties on the floor. Upon further investigation I realized they were wet (fun). Next up comes the search for 'the wet spot' in the house. Here is how the conversation went. Me: Bai, do you have panties on? Bai: Yep (lifts skirt to show me) Me: Did you pee pee? Bai: Yeah Me: Where? Bai: Over here (points to spot in kitchen) Me: (Observing that it's mostly dry) Did you clean it up? Bai: Yeah, with the towel (points to the kitchen towel sitting on the sink that I JUST finished wiping my hands on) Me: Oh (sarcastically) I see! (GROSS!!! Quickly rewashes hands after I toss the towel in the laundry!) Aside from those rare moments we're still wearing diapers at night! ... [ Read More ]
May Cloth Diaper Happenings
There are so many fabulous events (and new products) happening in May with the cloth diaper community I just had to share them all with you. Great Cloth Diaper Hunt (GCDH) hosted by Diaper Decisions. This will be the 12th year of the internet scavenger hunt and is now under new management. The hunt lasts all month long. I know that Kelly's Closet is one of the sponsors for the hunt and has a fun mini-hunt planned along with a coupon code just for hunters. #CBSNAP - the first photo-a-day challenge sponsored by Cotton Babies. If you're familiar with Fat Mum Slim's monthly photo challenge you'll love #CBSNAP - while it is cloth diaper themed you don't have to post pictures of cloth diapers each day. If you are on Instagram be sure to Follow Me (@TheEcoChic or theecochic@gmail.com) so I can see all your pretty pictures. Do you "Like" DiaperShops.com on Facebook yet? They are SO close to reaching 25K fans and have promised a big celebration when they reach it. Join me ... [ Read More ]
WaterWipes Baby Wipes
Confession: I used disposable wipes for the first several months and off-and-on over the past 3 years on my baby girl! It was our first experience with cloth diapers (which are intimidating at first to all of us) and we just couldn't embrace cloth wipes full-time. It was several months after she was born that I slowly began to add cloth wipes to our routine but I still to this day have a pack of disposable wipes in the house. I actually learned to love cloth wipes and used them almost exclusively most of the time (redundant - maybe) either in our wipes warmer or with a spray solution. I personally found that spraying the bum and wiping with a cloth wipe to be easier (lazy mom's way) than the wipes warmer, plus there is no prepping required. But sometimes I just wanted to pull out a wipe - wipe off the poop - and throw it away!! Did you know that most disposable wipes contain chemicals that are unsafe for your baby? Just like baby wash and lotion, some brands of wipes can ... [ Read More ]
Tips for Using Cloth Diapers at Day Care
One of my biggest fears when we started using cloth diapers was finding a day care center that wouldn't fight us over using cloth diapers. It was such a big fear of mine that I kept my daughter in private in-home care until she was 2 years old. When she turned 2 we made the switch to a traditional day care/learning center. You can read my full story about how I approached them to use cloth in my cloth diaper archives. Here are some tips that I suggest if you are planning on using cloth diapers at day care. Most importantly remember to stay positive and don't make a big deal about them. Remember how your spouse and family felt when you told them you were going to use cloth? The day care may react the same way… Show them the diapers and show them how similar they are to using disposables. Explain to them that they are better for your babies sensitive skin (and the environment and your wallet…but you don’t have to tell them all that). Explain that you will provide a wet ... A Cloth Diaper Tattoo? Would You Do It?
Would you get a tattoo of a cloth diaper? I teased last week that I was considering doing just that. On Monday I posted a picture of the alleged tattoo as part of my 10 Ways You Can Become a Cloth Diaper Advocate. I received so many questions on Facebook, Twitter, and even Instagram about the tattoo. "Wow! Awesome!" -Amanda "Is that real?!" - Erin "That tattoo would mean some serious CD love. If it's real, you win biggest fan!" -Mindy "Oh my gosh, you did it!" -Tara "You crazy woman! Love!" - Robin "For real?! Dang girl!" -Jennifer Labit Then later that night I received a tweet from Mona of EcoNuts with this picture (quickmeme.com) I confessed last night during the #RealDiapers Twitter Party that the tattoo is in fact...fake! Sorry to disappoint you but some friends of mine (Kim with Dirty Diaper Laundry and Amanda from Eco-Friendly Family) had a little fun with Photoshop over the weekend. Having said that though I am in LOVE with the design. I don't ... [ Read More ]
2nd Annual Flats & Handwashing Challenge with Dirty Diaper Laundry
Are you a low income family? Have you ever had to choose between diapers and food? Did you know that you could be using reusable cloth diapers instead of disposables? You can diaper your baby for $50 or less (maybe even free if you're resourceful) until they are potty trained! You can handwash your diapers safely and effectively at home if you don't have a washing machine. You can save your money for more important items (like food and shelter) and know that your baby can still have clean diapers every day! Last year Kim with Dirty Diaper Laundry organized the first flats and handwashing challenge to help educate and raise awareness of cloth diapering and to show that it really is possible to use cloth diapers with limited resources. I am so happy to hear that Kim is holding the challenge again this year. I personally learned so much with this challenge and it opened my eyes to the challenges that low income families face when cloth diapering. It also gave me confidence that ... [ Read More ]
Green Tree Diapering – Sponsor Spotlight
Green Tree Diapering I love the simplicity of their logo, don't you? It's a green tree - that's all! Green Tree Diapering is owned by Deja, a mom who decided to make cloth diapers, rash creams, wipes sprays and more that were safe for her own baby. Their products are made with organic and all natural ingredients like witch hazel, tea tree oil, shea butter, and olive oil. We had the pleasure of trying the rash cream and wipes spray out for a few months now. The rash cream is a thick cream that is cloth diaper safe and can even be used for dry or chapped skin. The wipes spray has a faint scent of lavender and tea tree. My tot has been getting some minor skin rashes on her private parts and a little spray on the rash has worked at clearing up the rash overnight. A great addition to our arsenal of eco-friendly products. Would you like to win a sample of wipes spray and 2 cloth wipes?
