It's that time again, school started back this last week and my daughter wants to pack her lunch this year. Our lunchbox station is overflowing so I'm kind of glad these supplies will get some use again this year. Last year I think both of the kids bought lunch 90% of the time. Now, to find fast easy lunch ideas that are healthy(ish) that won't come back home (or get traded). Our friends over at Stonyfield, Justin's and PackIt sent us a few goodies to get started, the rest were found at our local WalMart and Publix stores. My daughter is pretty easy with the main course, she really likes ham and/or turkey sandwiches. The only tricky part is that her school is a nut-free school, so the Justin's will have to stay at home for our afternoon snack. Here are a few ideas to help kick start your school lunches and bring a little variety. Main Course: ... [ Read More ]

Nut-Free School Lunch Ideas – Fun With Lunch Series
Have a little fun with your kids lunches this year. You don’t have to spend hours creating beautiful Bento Boxes that look like Hello Kitty to make them fun. Your kids will love the little touches and I promise, you can do this in less than 5 minutes! With an increased awareness of nut allergies, many classrooms and schools are going nut-free for everyone. I know that my daughter's class is completely nut-free (a few children in her class have nut-allergies) and it can be challenging to find things they will eat that comply with the nut-free zone. As a mom who loves peanut butter, it hurts to have to spend a little extra money on peanut-free butters - but the lives of the other children are worth more than those few dollars. I'm thankful that I don't have to stress out about my child being exposed to nuts in the classroom because it only takes one small encounter for an allergic child to have a reaction that could be fatal. Pack a Better Lunch Box

Here are a few of our favorite alternative lunch box favorites - Applegate natural deli meat - Applegate meats do not contain antibiotics, hormones, artificial ingredients or preservatives. Serve them on a sandwich or cut them up to create your own healthier cheese, meat, and cracker snacks. To learn more about Applegate follow them on Facebook. Late July Organic Snack Chips - Late July chips are made with USDA Organic ingredients, are GMO free, and gluten free. They do not contain any artificial ingredients, flavors, or colors. While all of the contents are plastic they are all BPA-free and lead-free plastics. I absolutely love the sandwich & snack cube; you can put almost anything in here (unless it's a liquid...ick!). I prefer my products be made in the US but ECOLunchboxes takes pride in their fabric and ensures that they are made in India in a NON-sweatshop environment. The owner, Sandra, is very proud of her product and I now know why. It's beautiful! The print on the fabrics are very artfully done and the colors are so vivid.
