Trip Binders and Travel Journals | Girl Scouts Traveling to Savannah
Part 13 of The Complete Girl Scout Guide to Traveling to Savannah, Georgia One of the last minute projects and surprises for the girls was a trip binder and travel journal. When the girls arrived at the train station (or when we met up with them at the hotel) they received a baggie of pre-packaged snacks (granola bars and mixed nuts), their troop t-shirt, and trip binder (including travel journal). The binders included a pencil pouch with their $35 spending money inside and some stickers for their travel journal. Three sheet protectors were inside the binders with the schedule for each day. The travel journals were small composition books (half sized) with fun activities inside; photo scavenger hunt, sites to see, history of popular sites, and murals to find around town. There were also some journal prompts for the girls to complete. Part 14: Resources, Spreadsheets, and Printables Click here to return to the Table of Contents ... [ Read More ]
Budget and Expenses | Girl Scouts Traveling to Savannah
Part 12 of The Complete Girl Scout Guide to Traveling to Savannah, Georgia Budget and Expense Spreadsheet (with some information deleted for privacy): https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/13tnIm02UlXXayCZFkrE2t7Xtr62md1pb3zEU21TlfRo/edit?usp=sharing Each girl was given $35 in cash to spend as they wish on patches, badges, and souvenirs. The only required spend for each girl was to purchase their Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace pin costing $4.25 each. Girls were able to spend their money on candy, food, and drinks also. Actual cost of our trip for 7 Girl Scouts and 2 Leaders was $585.57 each. Not included in these expenses was $100 in cash in the leader binder for unexpected expenses and treats for the girls. We bought a bag of cookies at Byrd Cookies to share, tipped the street artist, and purchased a few badges and postcards for the girls out of this money. All leftover cash from the leader binder was returned to the troop. Family costs varied depending on the number ... [ Read More ]
Cell Phone Policy & Code of Conduct | Girl Scouts Traveling to Savannah
Part 11 of The Complete Girl Scout Guide to Traveling to Savannah, Georgia Our girls are 11 & 12 years old and all but one of them have their own cell phone. I told them ahead of time that phones were not allowed to be used while we were in any activity unless it was for taking photos! They weren’t allowed to use their phones while we ate either. Otherwise their phone usage was not restricted. We didn’t have any problems with electronics on our trip and I was happy to see the girls taking photos of their favorite activities. I even made a fun photo scavenger hunt for the girls to complete on the trip. They used the map apps on their phones to help navigate the group around Savannah and learned how useful technology can be when they used it responsibly. I didn’t expect any problems from our group but we did prepare them in advance with cell phone etiquette and expectations. You can view a copy of our Cell Phone Policy & Code of Conduct that we shared with our girls ... [ Read More ]
What to Wear | Girl Scouts Traveling to Savannah
Part 10 of The Complete Girl Scout Guide to Traveling to Savannah, Georgia I’ve seen so many wonderful troop photos of girls in full uniforms and troop t-shirts. Our girls don’t usually wear khakis and I didn’t want the parents to have to stress about clothes shopping for the trip. While I did recommend khaki shorts/skirts I knew my girls would end up in jean shorts most days - I was right! I did ask them all to wear a white shirt and their vest or sash on the first day because I wanted to get some good group photos. I’m so glad that they all complied with my request!! I also found a local t-shirt shop who would print custom shirts for the troop for less than $10 each! We ran out of time as a troop to design the ideal shirt so I left my daughter put her creative skills to work using Canva and helped her design the perfect shirt. I needed a little help from the print shop to flip the font for us so I don’t have the artwork file to share. Click here for a sample packing list. ... [ Read More ]
Agenda Day 3 | Girl Scouts Traveling to Savannah
Part 9 of The Complete Girl Scout Guide to Traveling to Savannah, Georgia Brief Overview: Girls wore whatever they wanted to on this day Breakfast and Freetime before lunch Lunch 1pm Pounce Cat Cafe 4pm Pirate’s Adventure Escape Room Dinner Packing Sunday morning was low-key and unplanned! Even lunch wasn’t planned until right before we ate. One of the families found a pizza place nearby that lets everyone make their own individual serving pizzas, salads, or sandwiches. It was perfect for a few of our picky eaters and the food was delicious! Your Pie was located downtown just a few blocks from our hotel (110 West Bryan Street). The kids meals included a 7” pizza OR pasta OR panini OR side salad of their choice, a drink, and a scoop of gelato for only $7 - what a bargain!! If they still have their Peach Prosciutto pizza I highly recommend trying it! Halfway between Your Pie and our hotel was our next stop, the Pounce Cat Cafe! This was one ... [ Read More ]
Agenda Day 2 | Girl Scouts Traveling to Savannah
Part 8 of The Complete Girl Scout Guide to Traveling to Savannah, Georgia Brief Overview: Girls wore shorts and our custom troop t-shirt Breakfast 10am Girl Scouts First Headquarter Tour Lunch & Freetime 3pm Old Fort Jackson 6pm Pirate’s House for Dinner We started day 2 with limited plans for several reasons. The day before was so packed that the girls wanted some downtime. The Girl Scouts First Headquarters wasn’t doing scheduled tours the weekend we were there because it was also the weekend of their virtual QuestFest. They were open for audio tours and shoppers though - we were very thankful for that! The Headquarters is a 2 room building - one room was a museum and the other room the gift shop. The girls enjoyed looking at the Girl Scout memorabilia and old uniforms. It was also a nice place to cool down from the heat. There were no other groups there at the time. I picked up a few surprise souvenirs for the girls in the gift shop and most of ... [ Read More ]

Part 7 of The Complete Girl Scout Guide to Traveling to Savannah, Georgia Brief Overview: Girls wore shorts, white shirts, and uniform vests/sashes for photos Breakfast at hotel 10am Scavenger Hunt & Walking Tour 12:30pm Lunch at Telfair Square delivered by Leopold's 2:10pm Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace Tour 3:30pm Leopold’s Special Event 6:00pm Dinner at Tondee’s Tavern 7:30pm Walking Ghost Tour The Urban Adventure Quest Scavenger Hunt was a lot of fun and a great way to see the city. We made it through 6 of the 16 puzzles before we had to go to lunch. Unfortunately we never completed the rest of the puzzle to fully review the hunt but the girls had a lot of fun figuring out the clues that we did complete. The hints were helpful and the history of the sites was a great addition to our walking tour. The Quest started near the hotel and took us through City Market and the surrounding squares before leading us down to River Street. We purchased ... [ Read More ]
Hotel Review | Fairfield Inn and Suites, Downtown Savannah | Girl Scouts Traveling to Savannah
Part 6 of The Complete Girl Scout Guide to Traveling to Savannah, Georgia The location of the Fairfield Inn and Suites, Downtown Savannah was perfect for walking in/around Savannah. It is only about 5-10 minutes from the train station and located off MLK Jr near Oglethorpe. Check-In: Our party arrived at 3 different times but all of the rooms were under my name. I had called in advance to let them know that the other parties were allowed to check-in and provided their names. We also asked for the rooms to be near one another, and on the same floor. Thankfully our group was traveling with parents so no girls were staying in a room without an adult. Unfortunately we had issues with check-in and our requests. One of the parties arrived early with no problems at check-in. They used the card on file for that room. The other early arrival tried to check-in at 11pm and they wouldn’t let her checkin because her credit card didn’t have enough room for ($800+) incidental charges. She ... [ Read More ]
Selecting Activities | Girl Scouts Traveling to Savannah
Part 4 of The Complete Girl Scout Guide to Traveling to Savannah, Georgia Click here for a list of events and activities available in Savannah for Girl Scouts, pricing and programming is subject to change. Please check their individual websites for most current information. A few notes on making your schedule, we did a lot of research as leaders and as a troop. The girls were allowed to bring ideas to the troop as to what they wanted to do on the trip. I’m very active online and belong to several Girl Scout groups. The most helpful being the GS Traveling To Savannah Facebook group. This group has a wealth of knowledge and information and experiences worth reading. Take advantage of these groups to gather ideas to share with your troop but you know your girls best - think outside of the box when it comes to activities and scheduling. You do NOT want them to be over-scheduled and not enjoy the trip because they feel forced to be on-the-go 24 hours of the day. To get the ... [ Read More ]
