…and so it begins.
I’ve unlocked a new parenting badge; teen driver! My son turned 15 last month and within a few days he had passed his road sign test and had his learners permit in hand. I’m still not sure how my baby is old enough to be behind the wheel of my car. We’ve only practiced driving a few times so far, but I’m sure this year is going to zoom by quicker than any year in the past.
So far we’ve learned that I’m a much more patient teacher than my husband and that my Jeep Cherokee is easier to drive than my husband’s Jeep Wrangler. We’ve also learned that driving over 30 mph and making turns into neighborhoods may take a little more practice! Right now we’re sticking to back roads that are less traveled and during non-peak times of the day. I did try to encourage him this weekend to move outside of his “comfort” zone and we both realized quickly that we’re not quite ready for that yet.
We live off of a very busy and not teen-friendly road. There really aren’t many back roads to practice around here, so we’re going to have to practice at the local parks, parking lots, and in the neighborhood before we try bigger roads. In the meantime, he’s paying close attention to me when I’m driving. Watching to see how fast I’m driving, how and when I begin to slow down to make turns, and how to predict what others around you are going to do. I vaguely remember my parents teaching me to drive, but that was in rural Georgia on dirt roads! I also remember wrecking my dads truck in our own driveway….let’s pray that my son is a better student that I was!!
Over the next year my sons goal is to get his first job and start to save money for his first car. He’s seriously considering a pickup truck for his first vehicle so I guess we’ll be on the lookout for good deals in the next year. We haven’t been used car shopping in a while and I can’t say that I’m excited about it. Thankfully there is a new app, Blinker, that will help us find a truck locally. Blinker is a new app that was launched last year with some amazing rewards. Anytime you buy, sell or refinance a car through the app you’ll earn $200. Just enter the code BACKTOCALLEY when you join, it’s that easy!! (This is a limited time offer and subject to change at anytime.)
The Blinker app is run by a small team of employees in Denver, Colorado and is currently limited to the following states; Colorado, Texas, Florida and California. We’ve downloaded the app and have started our search for the perfect truck. I’m scared that we may find his new truck before he’ll need it, but at least he’ll be able to practice driving his own car (or truck).
….and then again, I’m not sure excited about pricing car insurance for a teen driver! I hear the rates are ridiculous!!! He’s gonna have to get a REALLY good job and quick!!
Do you have a teen in the house who is nearing the driving age?? What tips do you have to help me survive this next stage of parenting?? How did I get here already??
