How to Plan Ahead for College with Florida Prepaid

October 9, 2016 By: Calley Patecomment

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to have new content delivered to your inbox! I hope to see you on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. I have a lot of information on rock painting and cloth diapers in my archives if you're interested! Thanks for visiting!

Nice to see you again! Hope you're having a fabulous day! Can I help you with anything? Contact Me!

This post is sponsored by the Florida Prepaid College Board, through my role as a Believer Blogger. All thoughts are my own.

College is getting closer and closer in our future. How did this happen? How is it that my first born is less than 4 years away from entering college? He’ll be starting high school next Fall, but we’ve already started thinking about the future and started to make plans to help make this transition a little easier for all of us.

It’s never too early (or too late) to get started! With the Florida Prepaid program you can start saving for college as soon as your child is born. With a Florida 529 Savings Plan you can get started as soon as your child has a social security number. With Florida Prepaid Plans you can even start before they have a SSN. I know many new parents are overwhelmed with parenting to even think about college savings with their newborn. We didn’t start saving until the kids were a little older, but even starting when they are older will help relieve some of the stress involved with paying for college.

Florida Prepaid Scholarship Program

If you get started now, Florida Prepaid has a few incentives for you. If you register before October 23, 2016, you’ll be entered to win a 2-year Florida College Plan. I don’t know about you, but I’d love to have 2 years of college prepaid for my kids!! In addition to the Florida Scholarship Program, Florida Prepaid will be giving away 10 weekly prize packs including Visa gift cards, water bottles, and more. All you have to do is register, read the rules and information on their website.

If the thought of getting started overwhelms you, Florida Prepaid has a great Learning Center and Savings 101 section on their website just for you. Trust me, as parents we don’t know everything and it’s OK to make changes as you learn more.

…but, “What if __________?” There’s a lot of unknowns in our children’s futures. We can’t predict if they’ll go to college. We can’t predict if they’ll earn scholarships. We can’t predict where they’ll go to school. Even if we don’t have all the details, the Florida Prepaid plans are flexible and allow you to safely save money for your child’s future. I know that the money we put towards their college will get used and will be more than what I had when I started college. I’m thankful for even the modest help that we can provide our own kids so all of that burden isn’t upon them.

For now, I’m just hoping to survive the last year of middle school. In another month we begin the high school search. Here in Florida our kids have the option to attend their local zoned school, or apply for specialty programs nearby. We’ll be spending the rest of 2016 hoping that we make the right decisions for our son and that we get into a school or program that he’s really excited about. I don’t remember having this many options for high school when I was his age; we just “went to high school.”
