For years we’ve heard warnings that spray sunscreens should be avoided. I have to say that as a busy mom in Florida, spray sunscreens can be very appealing. Our kids move quick and don’t sit still very long for us to apply lotion sunscreen. I’ve religiously been using lotion sunscreens for the last few years and trying to explain to my friends why I don’t want them used on my children.
Did you know that most spray sunscreens are flammable? Check the ingredients list and you’ll most likely find alcohol as one of the ingredients in most spray sunscreens. Alcohol is highly flammable and can turn your sunscreen bottle into a very dangerous and explosive bottle.
Did you know that most spray sunscreens can be harmful if inhaled? Any material when sprayed in or near your mouth and nose can be harmful. When you are spraying traditional sunscreens, you’re also spraying alcohol, fragrances, and lots of toxic chemicals you can’t even pronounce. It’s never safe to spray any sunscreen near your face or in the wind.
Did you know that most spray sunscreens do not get applied properly? Even on a calm day, spray sunscreen is hard to apply. You fool yourself into thinking that you’ve applied enough and often times you’ve missed several spots unknowingly. Traditional sunscreens go on very clear and oily, fooling you into thinking that you’ve applied enough sunscreen. Even the eco-friendly, natural, mineral sunscreens need to be carefully applied, but do to their white color it’s much easier to see where you’ve applied the spray.
Did you know that Goddess Garden is different? Goddess Garden makes both a continuous spray and a trigger spray sunscreen. Both sprays are alcohol-free and do not contain any toxic chemicals that can cause problems when inhaled. Goddess Garden is not flammable and is much easier to apply. I personally prefer the trigger spray over continuous spray; but I found the Goddess Garden continuous spray to apply very nicely and evenly.

Tips for using spray sunscreens:
- Always apply evenly and rub the sunscreen into the skin. Make sure you don’t miss any spots.
- When applying near the face, Goddess Garden lotions work best and are safer than their sprays.
- Avoid spraying directly to your face, instead spray your hands and use your hands to rub the sunscreen to your face.
- Do not apply spray sunscreens in the wind.
- Always ensure you have good ventilation before spraying sunscreen; preferably spray outside.
- Don’t forget to reapply every 1-3 hours as needed.

This is so great!! I’m the same way… not wanting to use spray sunscreens, and yet wishing I could because they can be so much easier, especially for re-application. I’ll have to try this out ! 🙂

When my kids were younger they hated the fact that I made them stand still to use lotions rather than sprays but I always knew they never were as effective not to mention used to make me gag from the fumes. Thanks for sharing via #FridayShareFest. Have a safe and fun summer!

Thanks for sharing! Spray sunscreens seem like an easy alternative, but they’re potentially harmful and sometimes wasteful! You have some really great ideas about how to avoid those downsides. 🙂
