When did my kids grow up? I’m a mom of an almost 12 year old and a 6 year old. They are hardly babies any longer; even if they do still like to cuddle with mommy.
I decided to pull out the baby book from my youngest’s first year and reminisce over all the “firsts.” You know, the first time they roll over, the first time they crawl, the first time the stand up and of course the first time they walk. I remember the days when they would try any food (or toys, noses, and anything that would fit in their mouth) you put in front of them.
Both of my kids were fond of yogurt as babies and I love that my kids have been able to grow up as YoBabies, YoKids and now big kids who enjoy their yogurt. YoBaby contains organic whole milk, real fruit and nothing artificial. It was a great first food by itself or mixed with other ingredients. I love mixing a little fresh banana and avocado during the early years.
I was having a discussion with a group of new moms recently about healthy eating habits, mealtime routines, and how we teach our children how to eat well. I read once that it can take 3-6 times of trying a new food before kids will actually enjoy the taste. I still encourage them to try new things and to continue to try dishes that they don’t “love” at first bite. They never have to eat it all and I never force them to eat. I love it when they turn their nose up at something at first sight; only to end up eating the entire plate and asking for seconds. Those are the moments when you know that your parenting strategies are actually working.
There are still times that our attempts will fail and our children will refuse to eat something. I know as a picky child myself, that I have many years of food battles ahead of me. Even dinner this week has been a struggle. One night I wanted to take them out to eat and all they wanted was peanut butter and jelly at home. Tonight I tried a new dish in honor of “Taco Tuesday” using up some leftover taco meat from last night. Instead of the regular ground beef and taco seasoning, I added frozen corn, black beans, and spinach. Then I topped it with tater tots, cheese, and baked it in the oven! My son loved it, my daughter picked at it.
Thankfully my daughter asked for some yogurt for dessert so I don’t feel bad that she didn’t eat her entire dinner. Sometimes you have to pick your battles and as long as she’s eating something healthy, I can’t complain.
What is your strategy with kids and food? If you’re a new mom and your kids are still little, do they love trying new foods? What was their first food?

Yum! We love Stonyfield in our house. Starting food this week with our little one.
Baby is only 8 months now, but he loves avocado and oatmeal 🙂
We did baby led weaning with all our kids and so far, the older 2 are good eaters. The oldest one wanted a banana nearly every day, and since we lived in town then, and had a lot more access to fresh food, we often gave them to her. Now she doesn’t really eat them, unless you slice them into small pieces. She likes nearly all other fresh fruit though, with clementines (new to everyone but my husband in fact) being the newest. I found them on sale at the discount grocery and the 3 year old and 1 year old loved them immediately, and I was delighted to find something good for me that I would eat several of in one day. Yeah for me who struggles to get enough good for me stuff in…. but the 6 year old resisted until this past week. She realized she was missing out by being pig headed and voila, a new food that she’ll eat. Whew. All of them loved and still love yogurt. Our baby would love this prize pack!

My son’s first food was avocado. He still loves it! He will eat absolutely anything. He’s not picky at all, mainly I think because he’s so hungry all the time! He eats just as much as me and my husband!
My son’s first food was avocado and he still loves them. If he refuses to eat what I’ve cooked, I give him an avocado and he devours it. He’s only one. Just started my daughter on food and she had applesauce first.
My son LOVES yogurt. I can’t stand it…the texture is too weird. But he gobbles it up pretty much every day for breakfast.
He’s 13 months and we did baby led weaning. His favorite foods are Mexican and Italian (just like his mommy!) but honestly he likes everything! Until he doesn’t. And then he won’t eat it, even if he ate it every day this week.
Babies. So confusing.
for both my bus first foods was breast milk. My first got banana as his first food and he went through phases of liking them and hating them. My second child is not very fond of “real” foods, but we keep trying. So far he vetoed cereal, banana, avocado, but liked peas and chicken.
I read it takes twelve times sometimes to figure out whether they like the new food or not.

My kids all had avocado first and none of them like it. But they all LOVE yogurt!
stonyfield is the best!
When my daughter first started solids she hated apples and loved sweet potatoes. Now she is 1 & 1/2 and her favorites are apples, avocados, and cheese. She hates sweet potatoes now.
i fed my oldest fruits 1st and always mixed veggies with fruit. She is 3 now and loves all fruit.
My son that is 14 months literally eats everything. Except for blueberries. He eats fish and seafood and well seasoned things, lightly steamed unsalted unbuttered vegetables. Things i thought babies dont like. He is an eating machine. His favorite meal by far is chicken in the crock pot with a can of cream of mushroom soup and a little bit of water and barley.
both my kids their first foods were a mix of homemade puréed veggies and fruits and some Ferber oatmeal. Once they started crawling like my youngest is now I give them the yo baby strawberry banana yogurt. He loves it and be I started my oldest on yo baby she is 4 now and loves loves loves yogurt, and so does that baby! The loves fruits and yogurt
avocado. We did blw with our middle son and now toddler. Super easy.
We all love yogurt!
Her first food was carrots and she was not a fan, she is now 3 years old and most days really like carrots but it changes daily. She is a huge yogurt fan though, one of the few things she almost always likes.
We started with homemade baby food and we are now on pretty much anything. She eats and loves all food.
my daughter is pickier now that shes older. but she has always loved this yogurt
He had squash as one of his first foods that he loved. As he has gotten older, he’s gotten pickier and less willing to try new things but we keep offering it to him.
