I’m not sure how it happened but in the next few weeks/months I’ll have an 11 year old and a 5 year old! My kids aren’t babies anymore. I’ve been calling the youngest on our “Tot” or “Toddler” for 2-3 years now and I think it’s time I call her a preschooler (insert crying mommy here). Why is it then that I am still in the midst of co sleeping?
I guess I should call it part-time co sleeping actually because they don’t always sleep with us. My oldest one hasn’t really slept with us much since the younger was born; but there are still days when I find him snuggled up next to me in the morning. My youngest goes to sleep in her room during the week (school nights) but on the weekends she’s usually between us hogging the bed. Even during the week she finds her way to our room sometime after midnight and jabs her knee in our back. They’ve both always had their own cribs/beds but we’ve always been part-time co sleepers. Our bed is (almost) always open for sharing with them.
What does co sleeping older kids look like exactly? A big puzzle with elbows stuck in ribs, knees in backs, and a never ending fight for covers. Did I mention that we only have a Queen sized bed? Or that my 15 year old cat sleeps on my head? And sometimes our pug? Yeah, I think it’s time to consider a King size bed!
Here’s the thing about co sleeping older kids; they won’t want to sleep with you forever. One day I’ll wake up to 2 kids who barely want anything to do with their mom and I won’t know what to do with all the room in our bed. Until then, there really isn’t anything sweeter than waking up in the morning with a kid snuggled up next to you.
What about you? Do you co sleep with your kids? Have you always slept with them? How long do you think it will last in your house?
