How to Make a Cloth Diaper Baby Gift Basket

My husband was invited to a baby shower for a coworker and friend of his and asked if I would make him a baby gift basket…with cloth diapers!  Of course I jumped on the opportunity to create a beautiful gift for a new mom-to-be.  Her and her husband both got the “Are you doing cloth?” talk from my husband and decided they would give it a try.

What to shop for?  We wanted the gift basket to be fun and have some other items besides cloth diapers so I raided my closet of all the eco-friendly goodies that I’ve accumulated from trade shows, conferences, and even my EcoCentric Mom subscription boxes.  I will say, one of the perks of being a blogger is that I can usually find a few things to give as gifts.  My husband went to Target and picked up a huge pink bucket (we have one we use in our daughters room just like this for stuffed animal storage) and a few small items from the mom’s baby registry.  Then I ordered a few of my favorite cloth diapers from Kelly’s Closet (and pulled a few out of my stash of diapers I’ve reviewed).  Here is a breakdown of all the items:

What's in our cloth diaper gift basket

  1. Giant plastic bucket from Target to act as our basket
  2. Deluxe Baby Bather (from her registry)
  3. bumGenius 4.0 Pocket Diaper in Lovelace
  4. Thirsties Duo Diaper in Scottish Rose, Size 1
  5. Rumparooz OS Diaper in Preppy
  6. Kissaluvs Diaper Potion Lotion (wipes spray)
  7. Changing Diapers book by Kelly Wels (featuring me!)
  8. GroVia cloth wipes
  9. Charlie Banana OS Diaper
  10. Rock-a-Bums OS Diaper
  11. bumGenius OS Freetime in Blossom
  12. Planet Wise Medium Wed Bag in Midnight Curl
  13. Earth Mama Angel Baby Happy Mama Head to Toe Wash
  14. Natursutten pacifier
  15. Baby Bath sample (from EcoCentric Mom & Baby Box)
  16. Natural rubber toy balls (from EcoCentric Mom & Baby Box)
  17. Wooden teether (from EcoCentric Mom & Baby Box)
  18. Belly Armor Belly Blanket Chic Organic
  19. Baby swimsuit (Target)
  20. Baby shoes (Target)
  21. Mum+Bub hair & body wash, ultra gentle lotion, and soothing ointment by aden+anais
  22. Binky Spray

The estimated value of this basket is $300.

Cloth Diaper Gift Basket TutorialPutting all the items together into the basket took some creativity.  I used a few old boxes, newspaper, and pillow stuffing to fill up the bottom 2/3 of the bucket.  I used some smaller boxes to build 2-3 layers so everything would be seen from the top.  The picture above shows you some of the “behind the scenes” hacks that I used.  The pillow stuffing was perhaps the most helpful for filling in small spaces and lifting items up.

Once I got all of the items placed perfectly I also used some pink tissue paper and ribbon to enhance the basket.  I even tied a few of the smaller items to the handles of the bucket.

Voila! That’s it, now it’s ready to give to the mom-to-be!  You could make this same style of basket with any size container.  You would just alter the number of items you put inside.

That’s quite a gift! Lucky recipient!

A bit of a tangent here, but I think the reason that a lot of moms-to-be don’t receive cloth diapers off their gift registry is that the gift givers feel like 1-2 diapers isn’t “enough”. It doesn’t fill up a big showy gift basket. Sure, we’d all love to be able to gift someone with a big $300 bucket of cute stuff, but even just 1-2 cloth diapers is a huge help to a mom trying to build a stash!!

Yes, cloth diapers make the perfect gift. I put them in a spray pal.
