Today’s project was inspired by my son. I was trying to think of something new and fun to do with water bottles when my son came up with a few ideas of his own. He said we needed to make a UFO. For 9 years old I’m always amazed with the level of creativity that he has. Off to work we went to create our UFO.
Supplies:
- Empty plastic bottle
- Sharp knife
- Electrical tape
- Acrylic paint
- Accessories
We used a rubber cause bracelet as our guide to help us cut a straight line around the bottle but you can also use painters tape. Cut about 1-2 in. below the top of the bottle and 1-2 in. above the bottom of the bottle. Attach both pieces using electrical tape and paint. It took several coats of acrylic paint to adhere to the plastic. Spray paint or some type of enamel paint would have worked better but I always have acrylics on hand. Allow the paint to dry then add your own accessories.
My son wanted to add the eye’s so we had to buy some eye stickers but you could have painted them on also.
Tomorrow you’ll see how he incorporated a cereal box, his UFO and his Lego’s to create an awesome alien encounter!
Eco-Note: We don’t normally have any plastic bottles in the house. I’m a tap water person and can always be found toting a water bottle or tumbler. Most of my friends think it’s weird that we don’t buy bottled water. We don’t normally filter it either…just plain ole’ tap water. We do have a Filtrete Water Filter Jug (compliments of 3M) but it’s rare that you’ll find it in the fridge. I’m too lazy to refill it. Bottled water is one of the most wasteful convenience items that there is. If you are looking for one way to reduce your environmental impact this would be an easy step to take.
This post is part of the Upcycled Crafting Challenge (#freefromtrash) that I’m hosting this month. It’s part of a one month challenge to create from trash. This challenge will hopefully open your eyes to the number of items that we still end up trashing every day that could be used by ourselves or our kids to create fun and useful items.
