Do you ever use a timer? I’ve found that a timer makes transitions much easier for my 3 yr-old. So if we are going to eat dinner soon I might say, “Luke. It’s almost time for dinner. I’m going to set the timer for 3 minutes. When it goes off, it will be time to eat. You can play until the timer goes off, but then I expect you to come to the dinner table.” It takes a few times to get them use to it, but now he rarely throws a tantrum as long as I use it (he is a bit OCD due to his disability so that might be why it works so well). It couldn’t hurt to try though. It does get old sometimes, but we use it for most transitions and it has eliminated the majority of tantrums 🙂
