I’ve been planning this post for over a month now since my trip to BlogHer in NYC but I’m afraid it’s going to take me more than just one post to tell you all about it. While I was in NYC for BlogHer I was invited to an unrelated event sponsored by Scholastic on Saturday morning. I was a little nervous because I didn’t know anyone else who was going but I was super excited because it was Scholastic.
See I’ve been reading to my 7 year old son for over 7 years now – almost EVERY DAY! We read so much that I had to go out this week and buy him a bigger bookshelf. Upon entering Kindergarten he was very comfortable with reading and continues to be a very strong reader – reading at a 3rd-4th grade level (he’s only in 2nd grade). I can’t help but feel proud of him and his success in reading but what makes me even more proud how much he LOVES to read.
He loves reading so much that tonight as I tucked him in he was in tears because he couldn’t find his book light. I always let him stay up for a few more minutes as he reads a few more pages of his latest story. We never found the book light – it’s probably hiding under his pillow or lost in his sheets.
Back to Scholastic and the City – the fine folks at Scholastic sure know how to make a person feel special. They had Mrs. Frizzle from the Magic Schoolbus series come pick us up outside our hotel where they drove us off to Soho for brunch – on a school bus of course! It appears that Mrs. Frizzle and her class recently took a trip to learn about climate change in her latest adventure, The Magic School Bus and The Climate Change. I even got to pose for a picture with this fabulous teacher before we loaded the buses on our field trip.
There were so many wonderful conversations that went on that morning and so many wonderful things going on at Scholastic – and more to come soon as they approach their big birthday celebration. Can anyone tell me how old Scholastic is?? Take a guess! (I’ll leave you in suspense until the big day arrives when I hope to have some time to share more with you.) You can read more about Scholastic in the City and see their huge slideshow of pictures from the morning over at their blog, On Our Minds @Scholastic (http://onourmindsatscholastic.blogspot.com/2010/08/welcoming-bloghers-to-scholastic-hq.html), look and see if you can find me in the slideshow. Anyways the morning ended with some great surprises from Scholastic including a Book Buffet and a trip to the Scholastic Store in SOHO (right downstairs) where we got to meet Clifford the Big Red Dog and Word Girl. And you wonder why my son needed a bigger bookshelf!?!?!
Luckily Lil’ B got a few new books too. Big brother knew just what to do with his old bookshelf – give it to his little sister so she can start her collection of books. She’s grown quite an affection for her new Princess Baby book, I can only imagnie why!
Here are a few pics of the kids enjoying their favorite hobby – reading!
