Our Compost and Garden

I wanted to share the pictures from our weekend project (finally!).  Remember I told you how we made our very own compost bin, well here it is!

All it took was a 36″ X 5′ roll of chicken wire and a little wire to tie it together.  We just unrolled the chicken wire and tied the two ends together after shaping it to a circle.  Then my hubby dug a small area to place the bins and TADA we have a compost bin!  We have two of them so we can turn them without having to do much work, just flip flop the ingredients into the other bin.  It can’t get much easier than that.  The cost of the project was only about $12 for the chicken wire. 

This is the picture of my very first garden.  Now we live in Florida so I decided to plant my veggies a little early (I am very impatient) since it probably won’t freeze down here.  Of course I just saw the weather report this morning and we’re getting near freezing in the morning.  The garden took a little more time but it wasn’t that bad.  Once again I had the help of my big strong hubby to dig up the grass.  I helped fill up the compost bin with all the grass and weeds.  The soil was excellent already so I didn’t have to add too much to it.  We used landscaping lumber from the hardware store (they cut it for us) to create the boundary of the garden.  We simple placed them in the dug up area and we now have a garden. 

My little guy and I had already planted seeds that were starting to sprout so we just transferred them to the garden.  I did get a few tomato cages so they would help support the plants when they start growning.  I think my son was excited once he started to see all the bugs that were already living in the ground.  We found rollie-pollies, worms, and a few tiny palmetto bugs (Florida roaches) burying themselves in our garden.  He especially liked the rollie-pollies. 

We have tomato’s, cherry tomato’s, zucchini squash, romaine lettuce, green onions, cucumbers, and broccoli officially growing in our little garden.  Sounds like I’m going to be making lots of salsa and salads this summer.  Hopefully the broccoli will grow well since I have a special friend who eats nothing but broccoli.  I’ll keep you posted as our garden grows, so far it’s been easy as can be.  I’m not sure why more people don’t have their own gardens.  My grandmother still grows her own tomato’s and beans and she’s over 80, if she can do it so can I.
