So this is going to be a strange post for an eco-girl like myself…but I love, love, love auto racing…Nascar in particular but I was raised an Indy fan. So I how do these two worlds relate? Most people automatically think that racing is horrible for the environment and I’ll be the first to admit that it’s not the best sport for the environment. But racing has the ability to test green initiatives for the top automakers. So I was ultra-excited when I read that EPA was teaming up with Department of Energy and the Society of Auto Engineers to promote a greener racing. Some of the elements of the program include the use of alternative fuels and reducing emissions. In the 2008 season Nascar will actually begin using unleaded fuel for the first time ever. They also recycle all the used tires, motor oil and other hazardous fluids. I know there is so much more that they can do but I’m really happy to at least see the sport embrace some of the green initiatives available. It will be interesting to see some of these changes over the next few seasons. As for today’s race…let’s go #48!
