COVID Travel & Girl Scouts (2021)

Part 1 of The Complete Girl Scout Guide to Traveling to Savannah, Georgia

We weren’t sure this trip was even going to happen this summer. We had several discussions about “what if” and had just begun talking about alternative options for spending the money. The girls in our troop REALLY wanted Savannah to work out. They couldn’t really come up with another trip that excited them to this level. It wasn’t until early April 2021 that our council opened up out-of-state travel so we had to jump into the reservation and plan pretty quickly. I will say the hardest part of the travel planning stage is picking a date that works with all of our families. For us, our moms wanted to travel with their girls and we were thankful for the extra chaperones. We had rough budgets for each of the parents and gave them the option to make payments to the troop so we could book all the reservations together. Our council required pre-authorization for this trip so before we booked any of the trip we had to be sure they approved our plans. The girls helped us draft the travel plan and budget – it did have to be amended slightly from last summer. The approval process was pretty simple and quick for our council.

Amtrak required all passengers to wear masks at all times; except when eating or drinking. All Girl Scout locations in Savannah required masks during our visit. At the time everything else was optional in Savannah. Right after we left they started the mask mandate again indoors. Many of our girls chose to wear their masks indoors for most events. Since our girls are 11 & 12 only half of the group was vaccinated at the time of travel.

Be prepared when making your reservations about the rules for cancellations and changes. Most places have amended their cancellation policy since COVID and some are not able to be cancelled. Two weeks prior to our trip we started to monitor the girls to ensure that no one was sick leading up to our trip.
